Boak and Sons Hosts Regional 2017 BWC Safety Stand-Down
6/2/2017

As part of this year’s Safety Stand-Down activities, Boak and Sons, Inc. hosted staff from the Youngstown BWC’s Division of Safety & Hygiene and safety consultants from Rettew Associates, Inc. to review safety issues. Training focused on how to develop, implement and commit to a fall protection program, and how to identify all potential fall hazards before work starts.

The Safety Stand-Down is a nationwide BWC effort to raise awareness about fall protection. Each year, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration encourages employers across the country to participate in the National Stand-Down to Prevent Falls.  A stand-down is a break from the typical work duties for employers to talk directly to their workers about safety, focusing on fall hazards and reinforcing the importance of fall prevention.

More than 100 area construction professionals attended the event at Boak and Sons’ Austintown offices and warehouse, including several representatives from member companies of The Builders Association.

BWC Loss Prevention Supervisor, David Costantino, and his staff presented stats and information about falls on construction sites including:

  • Of the 937 deaths on construction sites in 2015, 350 were from falls
  • In the Oct-Dec 2016 timeframe, 25% of injuries were from falls
  • 30% of claims for the Ohio BWC are related to falls
  • The average claim amount from falls is $75,000
  • OSHA requires training for fall protection
  • 25% of fatal falls are from ladders

Monica Rakoczy and Kristen Morgret from Rettew’s Safety Consulting Division performed demonstrations on the proper inspection and use of harnesses and the proper techniques for rescuing a suspended incapacitated worker whose fall protection successfully served its function.

The Builders Association thanks Sam Boak for hosting the event at his office, and for offering to host next year’s safety stand-down, as well.
